“The firm confidence that the Christian faith is actually and absolutely true runs contrary to much of contemporary spirituality.  Spirituality itself has become something of a cultural fad.  Politicians, celebrities, scholars and the media frequently use the term without bothering to define it.  If anything, the ambiguity serves a useful purpose.  In modern American culture we can be “spiritual” without actually believing in a particular faith tradidion and belonging to a particular faith community, especially Christianity.  This kind of fuzzy spirituality allow us to fashion a spiritual life that suits our immediate interests and consumer tastes.  But such spirituality often lacks substance, integrity and discipline.  It means everything and nothing at the same time; it is as vacuous as Hollywood’s definition of love.”

I suspect that the spirituality/religion distinction has been overdrawn, particularly in the modern context where the two blur. I have just posted on it. In case you are interested, here is the link. http://deligentia.wordpress.com/2009/10/30/spirituality-and-religion-a-false-dichotomy/
